I wonder how telling the devil to get behind you actually works. Isn't the devil supposed to represent evil and disorder? Wouldn't he sort of give you the finger and do what he wanted anyway?

I originally had never heard the saying, "Get thee behind me Satan." Fortunately for me my colleague has been considerably brow-beaten in this area, and can fill in the non-fictional gaps to this fictional puzzle.
